Taneli\u2019s latest fashion collection was born from a passion and admiration for Estonian national patterns. Its roots go deep into his childhood, when he would endlessly draw dancers in folk costumes\u2014especially after parties in Tallinn and Intsikurmu. The latter was the site of folk festivals in P\u00f5lva, located in the summer paradise of Tanel\u2019s grandparents. Fueled by a burst of inspiration, Tanel once glued together about ten sketchbook pages to draw the entire parade he had seen. \ud83d\ude0a<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

In connection with the year of grand celebrations, Tanel returned to his roots. The initial spark for Unimoon came from a visit to the Estonian National Museum (ERM), where kind gallery staff allowed him to gently touch the treasures from the museum\u2019s collections\u2014wearing white gloves, of course. What a wild whirlwind of colors and patterns!<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

This is what Tanel\u2019s inspiration photo folder on his phone looked like after the museum visit \ud83d\ude0a Back at home, the work continued with digitalized collections and the folk costume book by Melanie Kaarma\u2014pored over so often in childhood that it was nearly worn out. But what mattered most was making this heritage his own, weaving his personal world into it.<\/figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

First, Tanel painted a large number of shapes, at one point even considering using watercolor patterns. But in the end, he stuck with a more authentic, embroidered look. And so began his search for his own Estonian symbols\u2014until characters from Estonia\u2019s summers and winters found their way into these wild pattern plays.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Bullfinches<\/b><\/span> \u2013 they came to eat seeds in the lilacs of our N\u00f5mme backyard on the coldest winter days.<\/p>\n

Great tits<\/b><\/span>, swinging in the bird feeder my father built in the apple tree.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Mosquitoes<\/b><\/span>, the bitter companions of Estonian summer \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Wild strawberries<\/b><\/span>\u2026 the pinnacle of taste! Picked in the forests of P\u00f5lvamaa, despite the bugs and the heat.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Ladybugs<\/b><\/span>, how many years old are you?<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Bees<\/b><\/span> \u2013 the day grandpa spun the honey was a celebration! Chewing the combs!<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Mushrooms<\/b><\/span>, the passion for foraging runs in the blood. Rubber boots on, into the forest!<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Bleeding hearts<\/b><\/span> and forget-me-nots<\/b><\/span> \u2013 my favorites. In fact, \u201cMeelespea\u201d<\/i> (Forget-Me-Not) is also one of the choral songs I sing with the Vikerlased choir at the summer song festival.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Baltic herring<\/b><\/span> \u2013 puts salmon to shame \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

White transparent apples<\/b><\/span> in the city grandma\u2019s backyard, the first fruits of summer.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

But also dragonflies<\/b><\/span> and snails<\/b><\/span>, crowned frogs<\/b><\/span> and pansies<\/b><\/span>\u2026 I\u2019ve mixed these motifs with visions from a hundred years ago.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

For Tanel, the bold world of color and pattern in national heritage is deeply important:<\/p>\n

\u201cEstonian national patterns and colors are incredibly encouraging for a designer. For example, in this photo there\u2019s an especially bold Muhu<\/i> sleigh blanket with neon colors and striped strawberries. \ud83d\ude0a<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/p>\n

For me, color is energy. Thankfully, Estonian folk heritage hasn\u2019t clipped my wings in that regard\u2014I let the brightest shades and fiercest color combinations shine far and wide.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

And why the name Unimoon<\/i> for the series?<\/p>\n

\u201cUnimoon<\/i> lures you into psychedelia. That\u2019s where the name comes from\u2014\u2018uni\u2019<\/i> as the realm of dreams and visions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/p>\n

The golden age of Estonian folk costumes (and sleigh blankets) was shaped by national romanticism, which itself was influenced by the festive garments of the Baltic German nobility and the fashion trends of the upper class.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/p>\n

In national romantic art and literature, dreamlike nature motifs emerged, woven together with a deep, almost hypnotic longing for something lost or unattainable.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/p>\n

And moon<\/i>\u2014the poppy\u2014is like the ceremonial crown of the Estonian summer, almost exotic in its vivid splendor.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

But this series isn\u2019t just about dazzling plays of color \u2014 Tanel explains the darker side of the collection:<\/p>\n

\u201cPart of the collection also dwells in the twilight. In flowers glowing softly at night and in achromatic wreaths. The beauty of the poppy fades away in a vase in an instant. A bright flower vanishes like a dream in the morning light.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/p>\n

The delicate transience of the poppy \u2014 it\u2019s close to the decadence aesthetic that fascinates me, where life, art, and beauty are exalted through their fragility and impermanence.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/p>\n

A tender sorrow, the ephemerality of beauty.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The collection was created following a zero waste\u2014or at most minimal fabric waste\u2014principle. Each piece features a unique pattern designed by Tanel and is printed with exactly the amount of fabric needed to make that item. Most of the products are one-of-a-kind, intended for women who see themselves in them and can thus have truly unique folk garments of their own.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve tinted the areas without pattern thinking about materials for pockets or belts\u2014nothing goes to waste!<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

For Tanel, the collection\u2019s presentation is a chance to create a story, stage it, and play with atmosphere. Usually, the collection is accompanied by a series of masks that amplify the message.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Unimoon<\/i> series gave fabric bags heads and knots eyes\u2014kind of spooky national mythological characters. This whole army was suspended in the air at the Solaris atrium\u2014a powerful cloud of floating beings. But in the end, these silk garments land on the bodies of their wearers.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Isn\u2019t there a contradiction here?<\/p>\n

\u201cWith my folk costume-inspired clothes, I find it important that they are light and flowing, easy to wear. I make clothes you can comfortably rock and feel free in, no matter your body shape or age. These are also folk clothes for the city dweller.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In the city, roots from different regions meet\u2014but here we are. Born in the city, enjoying urban comforts as cosmopolitans. The city is a dreamy, memory-filled, collage-like meeting place.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
